What We Do

Feeding the hungry, procuring open heart surgeries for children overseas, supporting local projects is just the beginning. Rotary Club of Verrazano has n a yearly basis, donated hundreds of turkeys to needy families for Thanksgiving. In 2012 when Superstorm Sandy decimated the Coney Island and Staten Island shoreline, Rotary Club of Verrazano jumped into action. From working with a local Brooklyn caterer to cook over 1000 meals to help feed those in need in Coney Island, to donating food and other necessities to families affected on Staten Island, Verrazano was there. In addition, Rotary Club of Verrazano donated much needed funding to over 20 families that lost personal belongings and/or housing after Sandy.

Below is only a partial list of our projects.

In 2002, a joint venture was embarked upon between Rotary Club of Verrazano, Gateway Rotary Club, Rotary International, Gift of Life International and Fundacion Corazones Del Cibao. The venture was titled Project Elsie, named after a Dominican infant that died of heart failure. Each club raised $25,000 each towards Project Elsie. Rotary International matched the first $37,500 dollar for dollar through its international matching grant program. Gift of Life raised the remaining $12,500. Fundacion Corazones Del Cibao committed to performing heart operations on approximately 40 children in the Dominican Republic.

In 2012, Rotary Club of Verrazano assisted YellowBoots (a humanitarian organization formed after Sandy) with a monetary donation to help further along their relief efforts in rebuilding homes affected by Superstorm Sandy.

In 2013, Gift of Life Italy of New York Inc (a project of Rotary Club of Verrazano) sponsored a project to perform open heart surgeries on 10 children at the Benjamin Bloom hospital  in San Salvador
